First person Droid test

I have been contemplating tossing my iPhone mostly due to the awful service here in Manhattan. Every call – yes, every call – I make either drops at some point in during the call or takes over 30 seconds to connect. And AT&T doesn’t care. The product is too successful so we, the consumers, pay while we wait for them to upgrade the towers. There should be a class action suit. Seriously.

Anyway, a friend of mine bought the new Verizon Droid (pictured) and when I asked for feedback he sent me the following email that I have used with his permission.

Love the Droid.

(1) Runs Google Voice, saves me airtime. I cut my mobile plan down to 700 minutes/month. Saving $50 per month on my bill.
(2) Runs Google Listen, a knock-off of the iPod.
(3) Runs google navigation, which is the best car-gps device I have ever used. Rivals the $3000 system in my sister’s Mercedes.

What’s bad?

(1) Battery stinks – even with turning off the GPS, the phone doesn’t last 10 hours
(2) Device is thicker than iPhone due to the pull out keyboard. Keyboard stinks.
(3) On screen keyboard pulls up wrong key occasionally. Also gets behind if you type too fast.
(4) Doesn’t always intuitively correct spelling. For example, if I type i the program should correct to I.

I am not complaining. I had 3 Blackberry models over 5 years. Droid beats them.
