Madison Avenue Needs Kleenex

kleenex

I have been taking meetings with colleagues in advertising and marketing here in New York. The meetings are not pretty. Everyone is frustrated and upset. I tell them there is hope but it doesn’t stop the crying. I’ve taken to carrying a pack of Kleenex around with me. Maybe Kleenex will want to sponsor something. I’m sure they are doing well.

There is hope and the numbers prove it. Online video more than doubled from $324 million last year (2007) to $734 million in 2008. However, video only made up 3% of the overall $23.4 billion online advertising market which had another record breaking increase of 10.6% from 2007.

The numbers above came from the newly IAB released Ad Revenue Report conducted by Price Waterhouse Coopers.

Therefore, in my opinion, the way forward is to get in touch with as many brands or advertising agencies as possible with products that align with the audience of the content your company is producing. Simply put, if you make content aimed at women approach brands that target females. My feeling is that the second half of this year will be much better than the first. Advertisers have budgets that they need to spend for 2009, they are just waiting – like everyone else – to see when the economy will hit the bottom.
